The selection of a public warehouse may be a difficult task for a company and could take longer than expected, with the proper precautions. Although some companies have the attitude that the job of selecting a public warehouse is trivial, it serves as a link that can help hold the company together with respect to its “supply chain” system. These warehouses can greatly affect the inventory, storage, customers, and delivery aspects of a company’s business.

In order for the right public warehouse to be chosen, there are many steps that should be taken. First an analysis should be completed on all public warehouses that fit the needs of a specific company. After this has been completed, the company should determine what location of public warehouses are best suited for its business. This is determined as to the location of the warehoused products in relation to the customers who are to receive these goods. A company may need various public warehouses in different sections of a country. For example, if a company has customers in Texas, Florida, Massachusetts, and Illinois it may need a public warehouse in the proximity of each of these 4 areas. Next, a warehouse that can efficiently and accurately check or calculate inventory should be chosen; one that is best suited to fit the needs of the company. A company should make sure that the public warehouse has room for expansion in relation to the company’s growth. It is a must that the warehouse has an efficient network system that can accurately take responsibility of communicating within the company’s supply chain system.

Before a public warehouse is rented, it is important to first visit the site, if possible in order to see, first hand, how the warehouse operates. During this visit, the warehouse executives and/ or managers should be interviewed to make certain that a positive and/ or workable relationship can be formed. This “workable’ union must be one that can have both a short and a long term future. . . Most importantly, a potential lessee must obtain references in relation to the public warehouse and investigate accordingly. The risk of losing products and customers is at stake, in the case that a company is not reputable. Its operational records from previous customers can “tell the story”, whether it be good or bad. With all of these components in mind, a warehouse can be chosen that best fits the operations of a company.
